Have You Made Your List of Dreams Yet?

Welcome back! It's great to have you here again!

While that may sound silly to some, having a list of dreams (or goals) and having those dreams actually written down, is a crucial step in you being able to achieve them.

Please note, when I say they have to be written down, YOU need to write them down, not have someone else write them down for you.  ;)

How many times have you gone grocery shopping without a list and returned home to find that while you’d bought all sorts of things that you did need, you didn’t come home with the item(s) that you went to the shop for in the first place?!

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve done this very thing, and it both annoys and frustrates me every time!  Even though I have actually needed and/or wanted the items that I purchased, if only I’d taken my list, I would not have lost focus and I would have achieved exactly what I’d set out to do!

These days, I make sure that I at least write the item on the back of my hand, although this isn’t always fool proof … sometimes I actually do forget to look at it!  Doh!

Dreams and goals are like that.  When you write them down, not only does it help you remember them and be able to focus better on them, you are less likely to end up achieving “less important” dreams, or even worse … none at all!

By writing your dreams/goals down, you are “giving them life”, so to speak.  You are, in effect, transforming them from “just” an idea, to a more concrete, tangible form.  You can then refer to your list on a regular basis (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly – whatever you feel is right for you), which will help to keep them fresh in your mind and in your focus.

Many people also use Dream/Vision Boards which are the same idea as a list, only they mostly use pictures and words of their dreams/goals, rather than it being a list, as such.

Life has a not-so-funny habit of getting in the way of our dreams at times.  Losing focus from our dreams for too long can often see those dreams forgotten or “put on the back burner”, or added to the “some day” list … never to be realised.  Sometimes dreams get put on hold for so long, that we literally run out of time for them. :(

Have you seen the Disney – Pixar movie, “Up”?  If not, I highly recommend it.  It’s a very enjoyable movie, but is quite sad at times too.  I won’t go into all the details of the movie here, but the reason that I’m mentioning it is because the main character, Carl, and his childhood sweetheart and then wife, Ellie, dreamed of visiting Paradise Falls in South America one day.

So they start saving for their trip, but something else would always come up that they needed the money for, so their Paradise Falls dream would be delayed.  This happened constantly, but they kept persevering until they had enough money to make the trip.  Unfortunately though, just before they take their trip, Ellie gets sick and passes away.  :(

Fast forward a little in the movie, and Carl is determined to make his and Ellie’s dream a reality.  Ellie kept an album/scrapbook with photos, and in the back of it was a picture of their house at Paradise Falls (just like a dream/vision board or dream list, she had it in a form that could be seen and referred to often).  Carl sees this, which prompts him to come up with a plan to make it happen.

Carl makes their dream a reality by tying balloons to the house (yes, really – it is an animation, afterall!) and eventually, after an amazing adventure with Russell the Boy Scout, Dug the talking dog and Kevin the 13 foot flightless bird … you’ll just have to watch it! … Carl finally gets to Paradise Falls!

Now, I realise that this is simply an animated movie, but the message I got from it was:

* Don’t forget about your dreams;

* Life happens, but if your dreams really are that important to you, you’ll find a way to make them a reality;

* Perseverance and focus will help you reach those dreams, despite the obstacles on the way;

* You only get one chance at life, so make it the best one it can be. :)

So my advice to you today is:

* Write down your list of dreams/goals (or make a dream/vision board with pictures and/or words);

* Read it every day (or whatever you feel is applicable, depending on the particular dream/goal);

* Place it in a prominent place, or at least where it is readily accessible; and

* Truly believe that you CAN and WILL achieve your dreams.

So, what are you waiting for?  Get cracking and make your list or create your dream/vision board if you haven’t done so already!

If you already have one, then “Congratulations” you’re on the right track!

Life should be a dream … shaboom!

Dream It … Believe It … ACHIEVE It!

    Very useful advice. I absolutely agree with you Kylie.
    At the beginning of every year I get together with my women friends and we create our ‘collages’ for the coming year. Not only do we have a wonderful time together, talking, laughing and sharing ourselves but we come up with really inspiring pictures to manifest over the next 12 months. I’d highly recommend it, and if you haven’t seen ‘Up’, do check it out, it’s a great movie.

      Hi Julie

      I’m glad you enjoyed this post.

      That’s a great idea having a get together with your friends to share ideas! Not only do you have a wonderful time together by the sounds of it, but it is another way of helping keep each other “on track” with goals and dreams.

      I have seen the movie “Up” four times now, and I love it. The first time I saw it, I did get a little teary watching some of the scenes, but there were plenty of amusing and chuckle-worthy moments throughout the movie too. :)

    Kylie,

    Does having a typed out version of your goals count? I have that on my nightstand and read it every night (almost). I also have a vision board online that shows pictures of my goals.

    In addition, http://www.findmattjones.com has really helped me identify in more detail the time frame for setting short-term goals.

    Thanks for the great reminder to review your list on a daily basis …

      Hi Darlene

      I’m sure the fact that you typed them and you refer to them so often would be just as good.

      The main point about actually writing things is that for some reason (and I don’t know the specifics of why), the process of actually writing things down rather than typing them helps them “stick” with you better – I hope that makes sense to you!

      When it comes to writing down my dreams and goals, I prefer to write them down, rather than type (that probably stems from my many years of keeping a personal diary :) ).

      I know that when I’m putting together a post, I find I have more flow happening when I actually write it down on paper, rather than actually typing it out (although there definitely are times when I type out the entire thing, but it depends on what I’m writing about – some things flow better on paper for me than others). I don’t know whether that’s simply because I really do enjoy the process of writing with a pen (I just love using a great quality pen – it feels great! lol), or whether it’s because I add bits here and there and it’s like a jigsaw puzzle working out exactly where to put everything so that it fits “just right”. It’s the same when I write a poem (another love of mine), in fact, that’s when I MOST like writing it down! :)

      Good on you for taking concrete steps towards achieving your goals.

      Matt Jones’ posts on Goal Setting are wonderful, aren’t they? I don’t know whether you noticed or not, but the first comment under this post is a “shout out” to Matt from me with a link to his blog.

    Hi Kylie
    We are so on the same page and thanks for the shout out :)
    I did see the Up movie and it really brings home whats important in life. My uncle says that even when you die your intray will still be full! Dont get caught up in the things you think you have to do. It was so sad when that couple didnt realise their dreams but was so inspiring to see Carl’s burning desire to achieve the goal. Finding out it was his wife’s dream really made him accountable and passionate to achieve the goal and gave him the “why” to make no doubt it was going to happen.
    I wrote down 70 dreams on a list the other day and number 46 was to catch a big fish while deep sea fishing. 3 days later my friend emailed me with an invitation to come deep sea fishing with him for his birthday – how cool is that!!
    Thanks for the awesome post Kylie :)
    Cheers,

      Hi Matt

      Yes, I believe we most definitely are!

      Your uncle is a very wise man by the sounds of it. We all get caught up doing things that really are a waste of time, or more to the point … a waste of life!

      I hope you get to catch your big fish – that’s awesome! Synchronicity … again! ;) (plus everything else on your list, which by the sounds of it, you’ll manage to do!).

      I’m glad you enjoyed this post – I enjoyed writing it! :)

    Well said! I love that movie! I am thankful for my children, bringing them home! I’m glad there is such lessons for everyone in the family to learn! You are so right! Writing it down is the key! It is amazing what happens when it is written. When written, it will be seen, read and acted upon. I am glad the kids hear it from more than just their parents! What a fun family activity to create an individual dream board! Sunday evening is a great time, I think we will do it tonight!

      Hi Linda

      It is a great movie, isn’t it? I love movies that are not only entertaining, but thought provoking too.

      Getting the entire family involved in creating dream boards is a terrific idea! That should help you all keep each other “on track”. I’d love to know how you go with that.

    Hi Kylie,
    I haven’t heard of ‘Up’ but am very interested in seeing it – thanks for recommending it! You are right on with the goals. I used to think it was a bit silly to write them down but now I find it fun and really believe it helps to truly achieve your dreams. What I have also found from physically writing down goals and focusing on them is that sometimes the goals I had weren’t actually what I wanted after all. So for me what you have outlined above also helps me to get clarity on what I truly deeply want and what I am prepared to really go after.

      Hi Sally

      I hope you get the chance to see “Up”. It really is a terrific movie. If you’re anything like me though, make sure you take a tissue! It’s a little “tear-jerking” in some places! (but I’m very much a softie ;) ).

      I used to think writing down goals was silly too. I figured that because I knew what they were, writing them down wouldn’t make any difference … I was wrong! lol

      I agree with you about particular goals sometimes not being what you really want, which is yet another good reason to write down your goals – thanks for sharing that!

    Hi Kylie,
    First of all, next to “Shrek,” “Up” is my favorite animated movie. When I saw it in the theater, I bawled my head off in the opening sequence, and then laughed until the end. I was so happy it won the Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards!

    Okay, on to Dreams. Writing down our dreams IS very very important, and then DOING something every day that gets us closer to achieving that Dream is a must! I see far too many people get all excited about dreams but then never DO anything to manifest them. Taking action is critical if you want to achieve anything of value in life. Putting off something as important as a dream is a risky choice, as we see from the characters in “Up.” Thanks for bringing to your readers’ attention that if you want your dream to come true, you must take action TODAY toward that happening.

    It may take awhile, but the journey toward the dream can be so fantastic that sometimes the dream itself takes second place at the end. It’s strange, but that has indeed happened to me.

    Love your spirit and can’t wait to see the big blog transformation you mention is coming!

      Hi Mary Lou

      Thanks for commenting! I really appreciate it. :)

      I LOVE the Shrek movies too! I’m glad I’m not the only one who cried watching “Up” – hehe.

      Taking action is one thing, but taking the RIGHT action is the key. ;)

      I love the point you make about the journey towards the dream being so wonderful that the actual dream/goal takes second place – that’s a very good point, and yes, it does happen. It reminds me of that saying that goes something along the lines of: Success is a journey, not a destination.

      Thank you for the lovely compliment, and I hope you continue to visit my blog and enjoy my writing.

    I completely agree that writing our dreams down on paper is so important! I like to do a yearly vision board, but I also have my “bucket list” ~ a long list of all the big dreams and adventures I want to accomplish in my lifetime. I had a pretty cool experience when I was 30, just after my son was born when I was sifting through old boxes and taking a trip down memory lane. I found a dream list I’d made when I was 18, and of 100 items, I had already accomplished 88 of them! I realized it was time to dream bigger! :)

    And thanks for the reminder Kylie ~ Up was on our list and we never made it to the theaters. We’ll have to rent it soon for sure!

    So important Kylie! If we don’t see those goals in front of us regularly we do allow life to get in the way and then we end up not remembering them. The other thing that I work on is believing that I can have those dreams. SO often if it seems a bit out there, I make the effort to believe and know it is mine for the happening. Thanks for the reminder!!
