During the colder months, my afternoon routine consists of many things, but one thing in particular is going out to the shed, loading up the wheelbarrow with wood for the fire, wheeling it back to the bottom of the steps of the verandah, then walking up and down the steps carrying the wood from the wheelbarrow to outside our back door (it’s a great workout, that’s for sure!).
My son (who turned five only a few days ago) loves to come with me while I do this, but on this particular day, it was raining when I was ready to go, so I didn’t tell him I was going outside because I didn’t want him getting too wet.
I, however, had no choice in the matter and get wet, I did!
He didn’t realise that I was gone at first, but when he did, he came outside looking for me.
He didn’t see me at the bottom of the steps (which are about 10 metres from the back door), but I saw him have a quick look around for me. When he didn’t see me, he crouched down low to our cat and said, “Tiger, where’s Mum?”.
It was so funny that I could resist crouching down at the bottom of the steps and saying in my best “cat” voice, “She’s getting wood!”.
Well, you should have seen his reaction! It was absolutely hilarious!! He jumped up, stunned and wide-eyed, looking at Tiger in utter disbelief, then he looked around in every direction! lol
When he heard me laughing then saw me, he said, “Aaw, Mum!”. Then we both laughed our heads off.
It’s times like this when I wish there was a video camera handy!
Kids can be hard work at times, but it’s the funny and heartwarming things like this that happen, that make it all worth it

I absolutely LOVE hearing funny stories about children. How do the children in your life (whether your own, or grandchildren, nieces or nephews) entertain and amuse you? I would love for you to share your entertaining children story here.

Hi Kylie
That’s a classic! Kids are so entertaining to watch, i could spend hours watching my little nephew discover all the things around him. Watching them with animals is really cool too as they seem to have a relationship on a whole other level. I actually think kids have a higher energy level than adults and communicate at a different frequency. I don’t quite understand it but its fun to watch
Thanks Kylie
Cheers
Matt

Hi Matt
Yes, I thought it was very funny!
You’re right about watching kids … and listening to them too! They come out with such hilarious things, plus it’s a good way to learn about what’s going on in their world. Through their play, you can learn a lot about who they are and how they are feeling at any given time.
Not long after the “talking” Tiger incident, my son was outside playing on his skateboard and showing Tiger what he can do. He didn’t know it, but I was watching him through the glass in the back door! (most of it is wood)
I was watching him talk to Tiger and explain to her what he was doing, when he fell off his skateboard! I could see that he wasn’t hurt, so I kept hiding and watching, then my son got back on his skateboard, turned to Tiger, gave her the thumbs up with both thumbs and said in a very serious but assuring voice, “It’s okay, Tiger. I’m alright!”. lol!!!
I couldn’t help but laugh, but then I was “sprung bad” and my son then knew that I’d been watching.
Imagine … you’ve got all this to look forward to when your little one arrives! (and I expect to you share your funny stories with us too!).

Hi Kylie,
Very funny. I agree with Matt, I believe kids are naturally on a higher vibration until they’re exposed to society, rules & guidlines etc. Mind you, a certain degree of this is necessary. I guess it’s a matter of finding the right balance. And you’re right Kylie, these precious moments are a treasure. Thanks for sharing.
I could just see this story unfolding as you were sharing it
Cheers Toni

Hi Toni
I agree with both you and Matt. Kids have an innocence about them and yet they have amazing intuition too. It’s such a shame that this changes as they get older, although fortunately, not all children “lose” it.
I believe that the more we both encourage and allow children to BE children and not little grown ups, the better they will “turn out” (but that’s a whole other post!).
Thanks for commenting, Toni.

I love it! Yes, experiences like these are what makes parenting a dream job! One of my favorites when my kids were little – My youngest must have been about 3 or 4. We were driving home, chatting and he very matter-of-factly said, “Mom, I’m going to be a better person than you are because I have some of You in me, some of Dad in me and some of Me in me.”

Hi Linda
Funny, hey? I keep a diary of the funny things that the kids have said and done because even though I can remember a great deal of it now, I know I’ll eventually forget heaps of it!
What an insightful little boy! I love the way kids think.
Thanks for sharing that story with me.

Kylie,
Kids don’t have a filter, and that’s beautiful.
Last week at the fruit stand, a beautiful 5-year-old little girl pointed at my cane and said, “What’s that?” as she wrinkled up her nose. I told her it was something to help me walk when my legs were tired. She paused, then queried, “Will they get better when you grow up?” Taylor was her name and I”ll never forget her.
Being MORE child like breaks the cycle, takes you outside of the box and definitely makes life a lot more enjoyable. Use your cat voice more often!
Hi Darlene
You’re right about that. Kids have such an unbiased perspective (in the majority of cases) of the world and it’s such a shame that this disappears over time.
What a delightful little girl! She made your day by the sounds of it.
That reminds me of a little boy who was at kindergarten with our eldest daughter …
I’m very short, and used to struggle a bit with reaching the bit on the top of the gate to get in and out of the kindergarten grounds, especially with a baby under one arm each time.
On this particular day, one of the boys saw me having trouble lifting the bit on the top of the gate and said to me, “Don’t worry. You’ll be able to reach it better when you grow up”. I laughed and laughed, before explaining to him that I’m not going to get any taller because I’m already an adult. He was most puzzled by this and said, “But you’re so little! I thought you were a kid!” I laughed again and pointed out to him that is I’m R’s and M’s mum, so how could I be a kid? “Oh yeah!”, he said, and laughed.

You can definitely see your enthusiasm in the work you write. The world hopes for more passionate writers like you who aren?¯t afraid to say how they believe. Always go after your heart.
Hehe!!!
Apart from being a blessing to many families kids can do the most hilarious things. What is even more funny is at times they do it so innocently without knowing. Great post.
