Where Did The Holidays Go?

by kyliedoak on October 8, 2008

Here in Victoria, Australia, we have just had two weeks of school holidays.  The school term started on Monday (2 days ago) and I am now adjusting to having the kids back at school.  You see, I’m one of those “sooky” mums (as some may describe me) who loves the school holidays.  I love having all my three children here at home with me (although there are the occasional times when I doubt my own sanity! lol).

Anyway, on Monday night, I was thinking about all of that, and about just how quickly my children are growing up, when the inspiration for a new poem hit me!

So I would like to share it with you.  I’ve called it “Where Did The Holidays Go?”.  Here goes …

The kids went back to school today,
The holidays went so fast!
Two weeks seems long right at the start,
But trust me, it doesn’t last!

I know not all parents feel that way,
And think school holidays are a drag,
I feel sorry for them, they’re missing out,
And so are their kids – how sad!

My kids and I did the usual things,
And housework still needs to be done,
But I made time for the kids and we did heaps of stuff,
We all had oodles of fun!

I love to see my children grow,
And learn new things each day,
But I’m also sad that it’s happening so fast!
I don’t care what others say!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not holding them back,
Each stage of their lives is exciting,
But the thought of them all leaving home one day …
(sniff) … Well, I just don’t find it very enticing! … (sniff)

My Dad once said to me, “Kylie, don’t wish …
that today is already tomorrow.
You’re only wishing your life away.
Trust me”, he said with sorrow.

Now, not too many kids like to admit,
That their parents are usually right,
But I believe my Dad “hit the nail on the head”,
With his wonderfully, wise insight!

So my advice to all you parents out there,
Is make the most of the time with your kids,
Once the time has passed, you can’t get it back,
Cherish the good times, the photos and vids!   (videos)

How do you feel about your children going back to school after the holidays?  Are you sad or glad?  I’d love for you to share your story with me here.

Hi Kylie,
I love that poem! We have another thing in common – I love poetry too. I wrote a poem about nits when Steph was in Prep and I carry it around with me in my bag. I should put it on facebook cos I haven’t got a website.
See ya,
Val

Hi Val!!! What a surprise to see you here!!!

Thanks :) I love writing poems! Even in primary school, I loved writing poems.

You’ll have to show me your poem when we catch up. I’d love to see it!

Kylie~
I lOVE your poem! It amazed me that poetry just flows out of you! And I’m like you! I decided when my kids were born I would enjoy every stage of their lives! I always had such a blast during the holidays!! It’s weird now that they are all growing up and leaving home~ But I’ll enjoy that too!

Hi Linda

Thank you! I appreciate you saying that. When the inspiration hits me to write a poem, I just go with the flow and write until I can’t write anymore.

I hope you enjoy my latest post – it has a poem in it too.

I’ve already worked out that we are very alike. :) I’m dreading my kids leaving home! I know that it will happen one day and that’s part of life, but I can’t say I’m looking forward to it in any way at this point in time! I’ve got at least 6 years up my sleeve until that happens though, so I’ve got plenty of time to get used to the idea.

Thanks for commenting.

This is beautiful, Kylie. As for me, I guess I do have mixed feelings about them going back to school and all. I do know how much they enjoy school and being with their friends, so for that I’m also excited for them. But there are times that I miss them and can’t wait to see them by the day’s end. I just focus on spending time with them as much as possible while they’re young, because I know that time flies so fast and one day they’ll have their own lives to take care of.
